USA Badgers

Page history last edited by Adam Augustine 14 years, 7 months ago

By now I'm sure that anyone looking at this site is already aware that eight current and former Badgers have been named to the 23-player U.S. National Team roster as it prepares for the 2010 Olympics in Vancouver. You can certainly read more about that on uwbadgers.com, usahockey.com, or madison.com (click here for the roster). Congratulations to all of them, especially Angie Keseley, who was named to her first national team today.

While the inclusion of Keseley may come as a surprise to some, it is truly the culmination of over 12 months of hard work. While Keseley was always a very talented player at Wisconsin (some may be surprised that it was Keseley who led all UW rookies in points in 2005-06 with 13-20=33, not her fellow USA teammate Erika Lawler), she became a different player because of her dedication to the off-season training program last summer. The result was a career year as a senior in 2008-09, scoring 18 goals and adding 41 assists for 59 points -- including four goals and four assists in the NCAA tournament.

For anyone who likes stats, I compiled stats for every player who took part in a major senior-level international tournament since 2006 back in April following the World Championship. I recorded not just overall points, but also points in games against Canada since the U.S. and Canada tend to be in a category all by themselves. Those stats can be found by clicking here. For anyone who has seen the type of team analysis that I like to perform, I am currently working on something for the newly-named U.S. roster.

Finally, a quick note about UW sophomore Brooke Ammerman, who came up just short of a spot on the national team. Hopefully she will be able to learn from the experience of training with the best players in the world and be an even better player at Wisconsin this coming season. There will be some pressure on her to perform, but she is more than capable of building upon her outstanding rookie season. Her time in Red, White and Blue will come, but for now she will have the opportunity to take on an even bigger role for the Cardinal and White.
